I am looking to buy a 2000 to 2010 Full Size Pick-Up and would like to know which engine is the best 6 cyl or V-8 engine that has the best track record of the less amount of trouble and repairs?

If you could tell me which engine has the best performance Dodge Ram?
Which engine will get 300,000 miles and is solid as a rock trouble free.

Do you feel that there are very solid Full Size Pick-Up out there in these years?

I keep all my vesicles in top running conduction.

As you can tell I know very little about trucks.
I would be using the truck to haul Wood Mulch and other things around the home.
Yes I need a truck to haul and pick up stiff where a car is not needed.

So if you don't want to help a person I will go to Ford or Chevy.

 

The point is they are all good as long as the maintenance is kept up. That's key to any engine.

 

Any vehicle is going to give you issues sooner or later. Keep up with the maintenance, as said, and you should do alright.

If you are looking for a Dodge Ram, the 2005 5.7 is probably your best bet. Nothing wrong with later models, but the '05 has all of the earlier kinks ironed out, and none of the suspension/front end issues that seemed to crop up in the Gen 3.5's. I can't really speak for the 4th Gen. I'd ask there, but keep your questions specific to 2009+.

 

If you want the best chance of seeing 300,000 miles then it's a Cummins.

For the huge span of years you listed, I'd rate 'em as follows:

1) 2004.5 - 2007 Ram Cummins 5.9
2) 2000 - 2003 Ford Powerstroke 7.3
3) 2007.5 to current Ram Cummins 6.7

Although there are gassers out there with that many miles they are very few and far between. I'm sure less than 5% regardless of manufacturer. By contrast, there are many, many CTDs in the Million Mile Club. But even with a diesel, maintenance is the key to longevity.

I have seen and or done work on one Ram 4.7 V8 gasser with 230,000 miles on it and three or four Ram Hemi trucks with over 200 k on them. Although I personally had a 4.7 blow up on me and I had to totally rebuild at 102,000 miles, all maintenance done by me like clockwork.



Buddy of mine just bought a 2008 dually Ram 3500 with a Cummins with 590,000 miles on it, used by a salvage yard since new pulling multiple vehicles at a time on a goose neck. Still runs like a top and pulls hard and still cost him $8000 to get into it...

 

I assume you looking for full sized light duty truck?
I got 237K miles on my 2004 Ram 1500 with Hemi.. Still going strong. I'm sure most other brands, faithfully maintained would give you similar results. I change the engine oil every 10 to 12k miles and the tranny fluid every couple years. I've changed spark plugs twice (once at 90k and today at 237K).
If you got big bucks and money not a factor then yes, heavy duty diesel are built to work hard and last long. But it doesn't sound ike you're looking for a superduty tank.

 

I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500, 4x4, long bed with 346,000+ miles on a 4.7

I also have a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4, long bed with 230,000+ miles on a 5.7

Both are used in construction, not beat nor babied, still running strong

 

Almost at 270K on this bad boy. It's a 4.7L which idles and pulls smooth as glass.
