Default Intermittent cold and hot in heat mode???

2004 5.7 Hemi 185,000 4x4

I am having an issue with the cold air coming on during heat. However, I will be driving and it will be very hot and then switch to cold. This happens without me changing anything. Then I will turn the heater off and a few minutes later I turn it on and it will be hot again. So I'm not sure what the deal is. I would think if it was a blending door it would not go back-and-forth without me turning the warm to cool temperature reo-stat. Also, I wouldn't think it was the thermostat if I simply turn the heater switch off and back on again. And when I say heater switch, I just mean the blower.

If you can give me any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

SAM

Thanks, I put some in the bottle because it was very hot. I filled up the bottle to the max line. I will check it this morning and see how it looks. I'm hoping that's it. I don't want to get into chasing this around. I will update you.

I found out why my fluid was low. It looks like the water pump might be leaking. I'm not sure but it is leaking between the flanges where the top tube from the radiator goes into the motor. It is dripping from there in steady drips. I tried to tighten bolts bolts but it didn't seem to help at all. Does this require a new water pump or a gasket of some sort? By the way, my water pump has never been changed.

The video shows it better.

I thought it might be a thermostat gasket leaking however, when I removed the upper tube I discovered that was not the issue. I changed out the water pump and the pump look fine however the gasket in that area looked worn or really flat. Replaced the pump and thermostat and no problems now.

Thanks!

Yep. I fixed one leak and that started. It was leaking between the pump and reservoir. The only thing I can figure is when I removed the thermostat bolts it put a little pressure on it and that caused it. I don't remember doing that but that is my only good explanation.

By the way, dodge designed a new pump for that and it now cost over $800 for the pump, reservoir and adapter bracket. We were able to find one still available at Napa. O'Reillys only has the new version. So, if you think you need to change your power steering pump you might want to start looking for an older version now. My pump was about $150.

So I assume in the redesign they eliminated the O-ring between the pump and reservoir. Never had to change my pump only my power steering cooler, but know how you feel about fixing one problem and others starting. I rebuilt my engine, then my transmission, then my rear diff. If I knew they were all bad at one time I probably would have passed on fixing it. But its a fairly straight forward fix to replace the unit. Most vehicles seem to have the reservoir separate from the pump although I understand dodge wanting the reservoir replaced whenever the pump goes bad. Some of the after-market parts are questionable but at the price of the OEM it only makes sense to go after-market or used if you cannot stand after-market parts.
