2003 dodge ram 4.7 hard start help...
HAVE A ONGOING ISSUE WITH THE STARTING OF MY 2003 DODGE RAM 4.7 1500 SLT 2WD. A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD THE MISFIRE IN CYLINDER x.
TURNED OUT IT WAS THE CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD THAT HAPPENS ALOT.
I HAD THEM REPLACE BOTH, NO PROBLEMS THEN JUST A BIG DOLLAR REPAIR.
ABOUT A YEAR AGO I HAD THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR REPLACED AS MY GUAGE STOPPED WORKING. THAT IS WHEN THE HARD START ISSUE BEGAN.
WHEN ITS NOT COLD/WARM OUTSIDE, IT STARTS ON 2ND TRY. SOMETIMES ON FIRST. NOW, THAT WE ARE IN WINTER IN NJ, IT COULD TAKE ME 3, 4, OR TODAY AT 6:45 AM, IT TOOK 5 ATTEMPTS. AMBIENT TEMP WAS 27 DEGREES.
ONCE STARTED, IT RUNS GOOD. WHEN DRIVEN, AND WARMED UP, IT STARTS OK. WHEN PARKED OVERNIGHT OR FOR 3-5 HOURS AND COOLS DOWN, IT IS PROBLEMATIC. THIS HAPPENS REGARDLESS IF I BACK IN TO DRIVEWAY OR PULL IN. SLIGHT DOWNWARD SLOPE TO DRIVEWAY.
I AM NO MECHANIC AND HAVE READ THROUGH MANY POSTS. HAVE READ VARYING OPINIONS LIKE CHECK VALVES, OR CAM/CRANK POSITION SENSOR, LEAK DOWN FROM INJECTORS, ETC. I AM NOT SURE WHERE TO START.
I DID TAKE IT TO A AUTOLENDERS LOCATION LOCALLY A FEW MONTHS AGO. THEY SAID THEY HAD FORMER DODGE/CHRYSLER TECHS ON STAFF.
THEY TRIED TO FIX IT. HAD IT FOR 4 WEEKS. LOOKED AT IT WHEN THEY HAD SOME SPARE TIME. I HAD MY MOMS CAR TO USE, SO IT WAS NO BIG DEAL AT THE TIME. THEY WROTE SOMETHING ON WORK ORDER ABOUT A SHORT THEY NOTICED WHEN IT WAS IN THE DARK WHEN CRANKING.
TRIED PUTTING SOME ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS IN THE FREEZER? MAYBE FUSES? WHATEVER THEY DID LASTED ABOUT TWO DAYS AND BACK TO SAME SITUATION.
WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE ENGINE FIRES FOR ABOUT A HALF SECOND. THEN STOPS IMMEDIATELY. I TURN KEY BACK AND TRY AGAIN, THEN GET THE STARTER TRYING TO GO, BUT NOTHING.AS I SAID, WHEN IT DOES START, IT RUNS AND IDLES GOOD.
STARTER IS NEW, AUTOLENDERS REPLACED IGNITION IN COLUMN.
BATTERY TOO WEAK? ANYT HELP OR COMMENTS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. CANT AFFORD A NEW ONE.THANK YOU.

Try checking the codes with a code reader. Do use a cheap one. You need one that also reads pending codes that have not fully kicked in enough to turn on the check engine light. If that goes no where I'd do a complete run up. Plugs,filters,clean throttle body etc. and see where that gets you.
