If your want them for looks and protection, check out the power wagon rock rails. I'm pretty sure they attach to the frame, but won't provide much (if any) step. As far as I know, there are no nurf bars for the Ram that don't attach to the rocker panel.

I have never seen steps attach to the frame, which sucks. I saw a set of steps attached to a set of rock rails once, which attach to the frame. It was handmade though. Do so many people like the look of steps? Last time I bought a truck with steps the passenger side step was removed violently from the truck by a stump.

Many of the original nurf bars from years ago attached to the frame since they were originally intended to be used as protection versus a step.
I don't care for the looks of my steps, cap or bug deflector, but all 3 are very functional and I wouldn't be without them.

DonG, I'd love to get every Power Wagon option I can, but I'm not paying dealer prices. I'd like step tubes that attach to the frame because my truck is getting taller in late Dec or early Jan and part of that is a 2" body lift. Attaching steps to the frame will give me better step spacing, and like you said, they are necessary for most people who get in a truck.

My Westins sort of sttach to the frame they utilize the bolts holding the cab to the frame and fit in a bracketed recess on the frame. The is only a support bar attaching to the rocker panel, if you want to call it a support bar I could bend it in half with my hands.
