Default Left Front End Squeak/Popping Noise

Hey guys.

I drive a 08 Ram 1500 4x4 Bighorn. I have 177k miles. I’m having some noise on my front driver side. It sounds like maybe bad bushings or ball joint. It has a popping/squeaking sound when it’a cold and I move a little and hit the brakes hard.

The thing is, I just had both upper control arms replaced (upper ball joints included), Lower ball joints replaced (kept factory lower control arms), Stablizing bars, Tie rod ends, and my front right intermediate cv axle.

So my whole front end has been replaced with all MOOG parts except my lower control arms and lower bushings. Do you guys think the lower bushings are the problem? When I got everything done, the mechanic said my hubs were good.

Just curious to see what you guys think.

Thanks!!

Lower control arm bushings sounds likely. I would recommend putting paint marks on the bushings to make sure they arent popping out or moving. My dad has delt with that problem and even all new parts still hasnt fixed. New parts arent always good so inspect what has been replaced also

Thanks 3rdgen! Yeah when I got my stabilizing bars replaced, it tightened up everything then the lower joints went out. Got those replaced then the uppers went out. I should have gotten new lower arms with ball joints when I got the upper arms with joints. I was hoping they would have lasted longer but it all went out within a few weeks of each other. I’ll get my bushings replaced.

Doesn't necessarily mean it ISN'T the ball joints. When did you replace them, and have you been greasing them regularly? The MOOGs are greasable, unlike the factory crap, as I'm sure you know. I have read on here that some have had issues with their MOOG replacement ball joints from time to time (nothing is infallible), though mine have been great for the last three years/35,000'ish miles. IIRC, they are lifetime parts, right?

I had them replaced a few months ago. I had everything greased then. They better not be worn out already!! Lol I’m gonna have everything checked again soon and get done what needs to be done. I’m pretty sure it’s the bushings. They are the only old part left on the front end.

Might be worth checking the cv shafts also when its apart. Cv's could be popping from lack of grease and squeaking

Not thread stealing, but question for all. I have a 2008 1500 crew cab SLT. Needs left outer tie rod (dealership recommends aftermarket TRW left outer tie rod JTE1454 - (made in India) since I want a grease fitting. I've heard MOOG quality has suffered, and looked at mevotech, proforged, carli (wow$$), and others, but it's way confusing. Dealership said uppers and lower ball joints also should be replaced, getting sloppy. Tie rod clunks...right one replaced before I got the truck at 23k (greaseable, not oem), now has 62k.
Recommendations..this is hugely confusing. I don't mind spending a bit more, would prefer American made, and a good warranty.
I don't know what I have regarding steering linkage, need to find out (maybe the TRW part number I referenced tells you something?
Thanks All,
Robert

I have been using mevotech brand ball joints from rockauto. They seem to be good quality and have grease fittings on what i have gotten so far. Finding good parts is getting more difficult it seems.

From what I understand, MOOG has a "budget" import line and their USA line of parts, still. I don't know the difference in what they are calling them any more off the top of my head, but there's an evident price difference, as well. Where do you live (didn't look before I hit reply, if it's in the member info)? Parts like that should last more than 40K miles if they aren't outright abused or in extreme weather/road conditions.

As for your questions, take it to a reputable local mechanic and get away from the dealership. The parts may need to be replaced, but it's relatively minor surgery, all things considered.
