Default Difference between full exhaust system and just the muffler.

Is there a major difference in just having either flowmaster or magnaflow muffler vs. the full catback exhaust systems? Not talking about the obvious things like appearance or price. Is there a performance difference? I would guess there is a difference in sound but is it a major difference? Thanks.

I have just the flowmaster muffler on my 4.7L and it sounds pretty good.. not overly loud but just nice - my parents haven't complained about it since they have been driving it but then they are used to me having loud exhausts!!

Looking underneath on the pipe - it seems to be pretty much straight through from the cat back at least apart from obviously the muffler and some sort of resonator near the tail... not sure if it is the same on the Hemi though.

Can't really comment on full systems but i'm sure someone will pipe up with something soon

Ricco, do you have the Flowmaster 50 HD, 50 Delta, or 50 SUV installed? I too am thinking of replacing just the muffler rather than the whole catback system on my 05 4.7

Going purely by butt dyno, removing the stock muffler and putting a 12" glasspack on the truck seemed to make her open up quite a bit more. Maybe it just seems that way since it's got a nice grumble now - who knows but the transformation is worth the expense. Just don't lose too much of your restriction in your pipe or you will have a turd on take-off.

I contacted Magnaflow about this exact same question and they said it was a 15% difference in performance between running just muffler as opposed to a cat back system. It was due to 3" pipe mandrel bent pipe coming out of the muffler as opposed to the factory
2 1/2" factory pipe.

i have a 4.7 and i just took it to a muffler shop told them to cut off stock exhaust and weld just a flowmaster muffler on with two turn downs. it sounds really deep coming off the ground and i usually set off car alarms just ridin through a parking lot. i think is sounds awesome
