Just playing Devils advocate here but............why do you change your oil at 3500mls?

Do you drive hard? or in poor conditions?

Diesels don't need their oil changing this frequently and they are noted, for contaminating oil quicker than petrol engines.

It just seems a little wasteful to me.

But hey..........it's your bag baby............

I am thinking about changing to 5W-30 because 5W-20 is so hard to find.

Right now I'm running Castrol Syntec Blend 5w/30. At 15K, I'm gonna switch over to Mobil 1 5w/30 and change every 5K miles.

In my Expedition, I am running plain Castrol GTX 5W/20

Amsoil 5W-30. The oil itself (Amsoil) is good for 25,000 miles. Just need to change the filter at 12,500, and top it off with a quart of oil (you lose 1 quart when you change the filter). It's comparable in price to almost every other synthetic, and even cheaper than some. For those that don't know about Amsoil, they wrote the book when it came to synthetics. They came out with the stuff back in the 70's...way before anybody even heard about synthetics. And the stuff is good. I know quite a few people that use it,a nd change it at the recommended intervals, and not a single problem.

I have used Amsoil and Mobil-1 since I bought my vehicle 2 years ago.....I did alot of research into the syn oil "benefits" on the internet and joined Amsoil as a "preferred customer" which cost me $20 a year. My oil purchase was credited to my "sponsor" who in turn paid a percentage to his boss. Amsoil is good stuff, but it is basically the same as Amway, a MLM.

This may **** off some dealers, but it's the truth. Go to the website and you'll see what I'm talking about. Biased tests results and overpriced merchandise. The folks at the top of the game get all the money, the folks at the bottom do all the work.

Again, let me state, Amsoil IS good syn oil. So is Mobil-1. They are made from diferent base stocks and Amsoil has been shown to thicken over the period of recommended use. Moble-1 didn't.

I can get 5 quarts of Mobil-1 at Wally-World for $19.99. My "prefered customer" order thru Amsoil would cost me near $40.

You do the math..........

Dusty

BTW, I have an "Amsoil" sticker on my SRT-4 that gives me 3-4 extra hp!!!!!!

When I bought oil for the Ram the first time, as I expected, I had very little choice in 5w-20s. I'm so damn tired of every vehicle I buy/own (a bunch) taking a different oil (every weight imaginable, some synthetics/some not, etc., etc.)! The chemical area of my shop looks about like a Walmart auto center.

Anyway, all I could find locally for the Ram (without looking all over my little wide spot in the woods) was non-syn Castrol. So, that's what's in it now.

I change oil and filter every 2,500 miles--religiously--except for my toys which get once a year no matter if 200 or 2000 miles. The issue for oils, my petro-engineer sources tell me, is contaminates and additive package breakdown. Some say that synthetics have lulled people into too long of change periods for the additive packages due to marketing hype and sythetics' higher prices. Thus, he recommends regular oils if it encourages more frequent changes.

Though some say I'm wasting oil, I consider it cheap insurance in rare, expensive vehicles--not to mention daily drivers that have never given me a problem using this regimen.

Btw, one particular petro engineer recommends diesel-rated oils for older collector vehicles that set most of the time because these oils have more anti-corrosives in the additive packages, some of which are harmful to catylic converters.

All the best.

I only use Royal Purple or Redline. I also only use K&N oil fliters. I do a full change at 12K miles and fliter changes at 4K. I got this info from a Royal Purple Tech (who is a good friend of mine). Hope it helps!

I use Mobile 1 5W-30. I just turned 50,000 miles on my 04.
I change it when it gets dirty, usually around 4500 miles.
