Need help with 9.25 LSD Rear Diff - can’t get pin back in
I have a 2005 Ram 1500 5.7 with the 9.25 factory anti slip diff. I replaced the passenger side axle shaft so I removed the center pin holding the spider gears in place and replaced the axle shaft.
Now I’m having a difficult time getting the spider gears in place with the shims. The shims slide right out when I turn the axles to get the spider gears in place. I can get the spider gears in with out the shims. But I can’t squeeze the shims back because it’s too tight. I can’t even get the center pin back in because the axle shafts are not spread apart enough to slide the pin in.
I read a few rubuilding threads and they usually have the diff out of the housing and bolts to clamp down the clutches. I don’t want to remove the diff because I don’t have the tools to adjust the backlash. Is there any way to spread the axle shafts apart so that I can get enough room to slide the shims and pin back in place?

Its been a while since I had one apart. There are small clips that hold the clutch pack together. Two on each side and they fit into the carrier when the clutch pack is put together. They are famous for falling out and tearing up differentials. Maybe Hey you will chime in with his expertise.

Thanks for all the replies. After doing some research on the broken retaining clips, it seems that this is a common problem. I wasn’t able to take pictures yet but when I took the axle shaft out I do remember that the clutch pack was somewhat loose so there was definitely no clip holding them together. I also remember seeing metal pieces in the oil when I took the diff cover off. Most likely the retaining clips because the gears looked fine.
I just ordered a new replacement clutch pack and retaining clips so I’ll have those installed and hopefully solves my problem.
