Default 04 2wd ABS and brake lights on at dash

My truck is a ST model has the abs/ brake lights come on at the dashboard. Also the speedometer stops functioning while this is happening.
My store bought code reader said it isa a
501 speed sensor. I replaced the sensor in rear end (it had broke). Reset code and all was good for a few weeks, the lights came back. After 3 days
with lights on, my truck starts dying at stops and sometimes while driving slow.
Sometimes it will reset itself after an unspecified time.
It restarts but annoying. My mechanic said his code reader points to
the ABS CPU ($600 for new unit plus flash). Strange thing is, there are no ABS
sensors at any of the wheels. Two questions here. One, can I use a unit from
a salvaged truck and would it need to be flashed? Two, why would I have an ABS light issue if I don't seem
to have ABS brakes? Sorry so long winded. Thank you in advance.
By the way, my truck is a 2004 2wd ST quad cab. 4.7 automatic. Pics are of the ABS module and Master cylinder area.
