transmission or something else
I need help please. I have an 04 Ram two wheel drive. No idea about this generation thing. The engine light came on and the shop told me it was an internal breakdown in the transmission and it would be $3500 to repair. I did not do the repair. Later a red light came on that said trans temp. I parked it for a couple of months. I don't like lights especially red ones. Before the red light and engine light came on I had noticed it would change gears when it shouldn't and also sometimes when I put it in drive it would jump. Also sometimes when I put it in reverse nothing would happen. Put it back in park and reverse again and it would then go. Now when I put it in drive it seems to jolt. Not sure if that is a correct description but that is what comes to mind. I took it back to the repair shop and guess what?, they have no record of checking the engine light or it having transmission problems which means they lied to me and I really thought I could trust this shop. I got my truck out of there. I need any info possible before I go somewhere else with it. I am female and at their mercy which these shops know. Please any info would be much appreciated. Thank you. Oh it has 160K miles auto transmission. Hemi engine. I don't know what else to tell you. Because I did not drive it for a couple of months the battery died and now the engine light is off, which the repair shop told me I need the light to come back on. But they told me if the transmission goes out it will just stop going. I'm scared to drive it. I use to only let a dodge dealer repair it but now I don't live any where near a dodge dealer so its other shops I have to rely on.

First things first. Check your transmission fluid level and condition. Your owner's manual will show you where the dipstick is located and how to check fluid quantity.
As far as condition, if you're unsure, but a quart of approved transmission fluid. Note the color and the smell. See if your transmission fluid color is the same, or is it a darker red or even brownish in color. Does it smell similar, or does it smell like it's burnt?
If all appears normal, you may have a serious problem. You may also be simply low on fluid and/or need a flush-and-fill and a filter change.
I understand your concerns. My wife always has me take her SUV in for repairs. Even I get the "you need this, you need that" sales pitch. Not knowing what they are talking about puts one at their mercy.
