4x4 trying to engage in 2WD?
I was driving my 2003 Ram 2500 4x4 5.9L Automatic Transmission down the highway at 75mph in 2WD and felt and heard a grinding in the front end. It felt like it was trying to shift into 4x4. I slowed down and it went away at speeds below 30mph. It's not a constant grinding, but it is present every time I get to 40-50mph. When the noise starts, if I shift into 4x4 it will engage into 4x4 and the noise is gone. When I shift back into 2WD it starts making the noise again. It feels like it is trying to auto engage into 4x4, but not going all the way in. I have it at the shop with a mechanic and they replaced u-joints on the front and it still makes the noise. They just tried a new actuator on it and said it is still making the noise. Anyone know what might be going on? Thanks in advance...

I’m not sure... if it’s a wheel bearing, why does it complete the engagement sound and the noise goes away instantly when I shift to 4WD? It really feels like the 4x4 is beginning to engage and that’s the noise and feel that I’m getting.

There was a forum post about this exact issue I read about that you're having. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...eel-drive.html This it I believe as your symptoms are sounding similar.
