Thanks for all the advice. I decided to leave it alone and press the bearing on. I don't have anybody near by to lash a new ring and pinion without putting it on a trailer in the middle of the winter and vice versa. AGAIN THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. All you need is a dial indicator with a magnetic base to set your backlash, but since you have it all apart you will need to seat your pinion depth and preload as well. You will also need to buy or make a special tool to turn the side adjusters for the carrier, I made my own with a 36 mm nut welded on a 1/2" piece of pipe and a bolt welded in the other end so you can get a socket on it.
