Default Code scanner connects to VPW instead of CAN protocol?

2004 1500 5.7L
I plugged in my scanner (Innova 3100j) to my truck yesterday to see if there were any codes relating to some problems, but when I connected it instead of connecting to the CAN protocol (which I'm pretty sure it was before) it now seems to connect to the VPW protocol.

Is this correct? I swear I could remember it connecting to the CAN protocol when I used it last, about 6 months ago.

Can anyone confirm if this is the right protocol for a 2004? I know in the service manual it mentions sending J1850 signals, which if I'm not mistaken is VPW protocol??

I just want to make sure nothing is wrong because I could swear before when my scanner connected it would connect to the CAN protocol.
