Default Emisission leak- smoke test results

05 Ram 2500 4x4, 5.7. Got a CEL, advance tells me I need a new gas cap and I have an emission leak, not much more help than that. Replaced the gas cap, took it to firestone for a diagnostic including a smoke test. They tell me it’s coming from around the fuel pump, recommend a new fuel pump at $600+ I’m no mechanic but I’m fairly handy, I could do it myself with a $180 part from advance. My question is; do you guys think I need to do the pump or possibly just some hoses? Will I still be dropping the tank either way? Any other thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

did they actually see it coming out of the pump assembly or just smoke from some unknown source at the top? Where did they put the smoke in? the system is normally open...unless the vent valve is closed with a scan tool during testing...it will vent smoke out the vent..the vent is located in front of the tank.

how much do you trust their diagnosis? if you are ok with it...change the pump and pump o-ring yourself. Another hour of diagnosis will cost near the price of the pump.

if you question it.... they should be able to see the top off the tank with the driveshaft removed or with mirrors.

if you really want to go nuts...got 4 friends who will help lift off the box?...with the box off you can see everything for smoke testing....and if its the pump...its all open for removal.

Thanks primem, couldn’t get a definitive answer, therefore, I only trust the diagnoses as far as ‘you’re problem’s in that area, you need a new pump’. The body is lifted, so I can see the top of the tank and could probably get to all the hoses. If it’s the o-ring and I’m going to do the pump, that’s exactly how I’ll do it. Had a pump go out on a ‘96 1500 right after I filled up 35 gals.

Of course. Fuel pumps ALWAYS go out RIGHT AFTER you fill the tank..........

yep...just did my fp this weekend...was hammering on the tank to get it started. I planned to drive it all week to get the tank level down but nope; had to change it out full. The oem pump lasted 266 000 kilometers and 12 years so it lived a good life.
