02 ram 5.9L scan code #1491
Hi,
I have a 2002 Ram 1500 with V8 - 5.9 L 127k miles. Check engine light issue. Scan tool is showing #1491 which is the A/C fan relay. I have replaced it (#64) in the fuse box. Cleared the code, check engine light went off & the A/C worked great for 2 days. Then the A/C performance dropped down & the check engine light came back on. Disconnected both battery cables & hooked them together for 20 minutes to clear computer. Installed new relay (#64).
Took a test drive & the check engine came back on without turning on the A/C whatsoever.
A/C condenser looks to be in fair/poor condition. Fan does come on. A/C works so so at low speed - then much better at 30 MPH plus.
I need to get the check engine light off so I can pass a smog check here in California.
Appreciate any help or suggestions.
Thanks very much!

Sounds like the condenser fan is on its way out. If you have an amp clamp check the power consumption of the fan while the AC is on. Do not use your multimeters 10a current probe or you'll burn up a generally expensive fuse inside of it.
Did you replace the condenser fan fuse by chance? With the right size one? And did those relay terminals look burnt?
