Bearing replacement on front axle stub shaft?
I have a 2006 Ram 1500 4WD and the front passenger side axle seal is leaking. I had it in the shop for new tires and asked them to just replace the seal while they were working on it. they looked at it and said the seal is damaged because the bearing on the stub shaft is worn and has some play in it. So, I'm going to do the repair myself but I'm questioning whether I need to buy a whole new stub shaft with the bearing on it, or is it feasible to get just the bearing and replace that on the original stub shaft? Is that something that can be done without a hydraulic press or other special shop tools? We're talking $90 vs $12 if I can do just the bearing, but if there's a chance the stub shaft could be worn I'll suck it up and buy the whole thing.
Another thing I noticed while I was in there is a cut about an inch long on the inner CV joint boot. I'm not sure what the condition of the CV joint is, I don't see any grease flung out but I'm wondering if something like that is big enough of a deal to replace or not. I would consider replacing just the boot but can't find one for sale anywhere, I checked rock auto, summit racing, amazon, etc. Anyone have a source and/or part number for me?
thank you! as always everyone on here is very helpful, I appreciate it.
