Potential purchase: 2003 Ram 1500 W/4.7L & 5speed
I have the opportunity to buy this truck cheap but there is a catch. It doesn’t run.
The truck has 175,000 on it and had ran great until it “quote” backfired. Now it will not start/run but after sitting for days it will try to start but dies instantly.
To me this sounds like a timing system failure but not being very well versed in mopar engines and know nothing about the 4.7L. I want to get the opinion of people that have experience with the 4.7 to see if I am on the right track thinking it’s a timing set issue or something else completely. What is commonly involved with timing chain failures in these engines? Bent valves or anything else to be expected? I have to decide if it is worth buying and what i could face to get it running if I buy this truck.

I’ve had a timing issue on my truck. It’s like that one. The tensioners gave out and caused slack in the timing and made it jump time and bent valves were a problem. That’s what I had to deal with. But it is difficult to time these engines by yourself. Especially since they are over head cammed. I bought mine for 500$ and it had that problem and I still haven’t gotten it running right. But I think it will be well worth the work if everything is done right the first time.
