So got the parts arts for my truck. Got an 02 5.9 4x4 now she’s got 139k. my plenum just started leaking...rear mains leaking some so frig it

got my Hughes plenum kit with all new bolts and gaskets, rear main seal, differential gaskets, cloyes double roller timing chain, timing gasket set, oil pan gasket, and a lower ball joint cuz I need one of them....truck runs excellent now but hey for under $300 in parts, whatever....I run a shop now so I obviously do all my own work. Got got into my truck finally today. I started getting a misfire cylinder 8 so I pulled plug. As you can see not to good.

Now this will send everyone for a loop. So I go check compression on cylinder 8. Took out fuel pump relay and fuse. Started truck till it died to get fuel out. Unplugged all my spark plug wires. Unplugged coil. Hooked up compression gauge to 8 and the truck would START and RUN for about 3 seconds then die. Did this for about 15 tries. So obviously something is amiss and I couldn’t get accurate reading. Ignition completely unhooked, fuel disabled and still truck was starting. I then took out all plugs on passenger side and guess what. Still would start for 3 seconds and die.

Ive been working on vehicles along time. I’ve rebuilt engines ground up, I’m not a backyard mechanic and over never seen this....

but anyways I’m tearing it down to check heads and main bearings etc. more pics to come

 

The new plug is significantly shorter than the original...... was the old plug getting hammered by the piston?

 

I wonder where that electrode tip is right now? This may be one of those, "find it now or find it later" situations.

 

Is it possible the starter is spinning it and it keeps going from inertia? Like a spinning top? It shouldn't run on its own with no plugs in it.

 

lol that was a pic I sent to my wife showing her difference between a good plug and mine....I bought all new champion copper plugs....and no I checked with boroscope nothing has hit piston, valves/pushrods good. My co worker stopped in and said he’s seen plugs like that 1000 times. He has 30 yrs experience

 

Today went south very quick. Went to go remove harmonic balancer. Mines the type with no holes or no lip and I tried 4 different pullers to no avail. So I rigged it up and went to put tension on. I was right above my snap on pry bar (with a metal end for hammering) and it launched out as I put heavy torque on and it came up and wrecked my eye...threw a paper towel on it and kept going...cleaned intake and installed the Hughes plate...cleaned all the mating surfaces on the engine, and extracted the 1 manifold bolt that snapped...then I called it a day for my eye swelled shut...get back into it tomorrow...

Yeah, with that, I think you got quite a bit done. Put some ice on it.... takes out some of the swelling, and reduces the pain by a bit.

 

Honestly I don’t really feel it, but the bubble over eye is so big that it’s come down closing my eye lol. Hard to explain but I think I need to cut it open again to release that bubble

 

No, don't do that. Let the swelling go down normally. You wouldn't like the results otherwise.....
