Hi looking to swap a 2017 Durango 5.7 into my 2004 Ram 5.7. I bought an entire engine,Tranny, and motor wiring harness for a song. I'd like to know what I'll need to complete this swap. I don't need to need the newer tranny if it's to complicated. I would like to use most of the complete long block if as possible. I know the MDS will need removed or disabled and I've read the crank reluctor rings may have a different count as well. I can use as many parts off my old motor as needed as it still runs but is tired. Some insight on how to and what is needed to complete this swap would be great.

Sorry to say Ricky but your in for a huge headache. I would do a lot more research and searching before turning a wrench.

 

LOL...you can't, unless you intend to swap the entire Durango (or a 2009+ Ram) into your truck.

 

I was more or less just looking to use the long block. I've heard of it being done before just can't find the posts. To get the tranny to work probably wouldn't be worth the effort I'm sure.

To just use the long block you'd have to pull the crank to swap the tone wheel. Then you'd have to get rid of MDS and VVT. You need port adapter plates to avoid port mismatch using the stock intake manifold. This isn't even counting the accessory drive differences. You'd have to customize everything and quite possibly convert to an electric fan. None of your stock accessories would bolt to that engine. Lot of money to spend ending up with an engine that's probably only as powerful as the one you're replacing lol. The trans could be made to work, but it's a $1000 harness, custom driveshaft and either convert to floor shift or find a spot for the newer rotary shifter to sit.

 

I was aware of most but not all of these things. Was hoping to at least be able to use the long block. Not looking like it's worth the effort. I'll just rebuild the old one I think and sell the 2017 motor. It's nearly complete except for the alternator which I needed for my Hellkitty including the engine wiring harness AC etc. I'll ask $2500 and post it. only has 17k on it. Thanks for the info sir.

I was wondering what was the reasoning for this swap, especially picking an engine so different that only has 30hp more. You could keep the heads and intake off that engine, those are usable.
