Default Fuel Pump Replacement

2003 Dodge Ram 4.7L SLT Quad Cab 2WD

Fuel Pump Replacement (by removing bed)

Tools needed to make your life easier:
Fuel pump removal tool (to remove fuel pump lid)
Socket/Wrench extension (about 6 to 10 inches is fine)
Impact gun / breaker bar (for bed bolts)
Trim removal tool (for tail light harness clips)

Quick Guide:
Disconnect negative terminal on your battery.
Release some fuel pressure from your fuel pressure valve on the passenger side
fuel rail in your engine bay.
Remove tail light harness.
Remove tail light harness clips attached to the frame.
Remove gas filler neck and air vent tube.
Remove ground cable near the rear passenger door.
Remove the 6 bed bolts.
Get 4 people to help lift the bed.
Remove fuel pump connector and gas line.
Remove fuel pump lid.
Remove the fuel pump.

Detailed Guide:
-- The night before removing your bed (and probably an hour before as well),
Spray the 6 bed bolts with WD-40. Because those bolts have lock tight and are in
there strong.
-- Disconnect negative terminal on your battery. Release some fuel pressure from
your fuel pressure valve on the passenger side fuel rail in your engine bay. Put
a paper towel or rag underneath it to catch any gas.
-- Remove your tail light harness from the main connector and remove the tail
light harness clips that are attached to the frame with a trim removal tool.
-- Remove your gas filler neck and air vent tube by removing the hose clamps,
then pulling the tubes out. This is right under your gas fill door
-- Remove the ground cable near the rear passenger door 10mm)
-- With an impact gun or a breaker bar, remove the 6 bolts (18mm) holding the
bed. Two are in the front, and the other 4 are in the rear (3 on each side same
location across from each other). You remove them from beneath your truck bed,
not from the top of it. After this, your bed is free to lift.
-- I would recommend 4 people total to help lift the bed and slide it back a
little or just move it out of the way. If you do it with less, you might get a
scratch or two if youâ99re not careful.
-- Clean the fuel pump area with a broom and/or vacuum
-- Remove the fuel pump electrical connector and the gas line (right next to
each other on top of the fuel pump). The gas line has a small holding clip where
you will need to push down on both sides, then remove the gas line. If you
donâ99t have a replacement for this holding clip, be careful not to break this
when removing it.
-- Remove the fuel pump lid with a fuel pump removal tool.
-- Remove the fuel pump by lifting the fuel pump up. Careful with the gas level sensor float. Have a bucket nearby to put this old fuel pump into, it will have gas in it.
** When installing the new fuel pump, there is an arrow on the fuel pump which
you need to line up to the 3 lines on the gas tank, this is the way the fuel
pump should be installed.
** Put it in 3 quarters of the way in first, then position the fuel pump lid in
place on top of the fuel pump, then push the fuel pump the rest of the way while
locking in the fuel pump lid at the same time. (if you put the fuel pump in all
the way first, then try and putting the lid, the lid wonâ99t fit in correctly).
** Reconnect battery and test the Fuel Pump/Truck before installing everything
else and putting the bed back on.

Its a pretty easy job if you get the tools recommended and help to remove/slide
the bed. Took me about an hour and a half for everything including putting my
tools back and clean up.

Or you can get the bed up by yourself with four feet of chain, a come-along, and a sturdy shade tree. Take off all but the two rear bolts, and leave the two rear bolts barely on.

I've done this on both of my Dodges, it truly is an easy job and unfortunately I don't have 3 people around me to help. I lifted the bed on the driver side by my self and shoved a 4x4 under there and proceeded to remove and install. Directions are spot on....Good Job.
