Default Backup cam advice

A few questions regarding adding a backup camera to my ‘07 1500. I have not yet chosen a double DIN radio yet and there are no audio controls on the steering wheel

  1. Does a camera with the assist lane option require some sort of sensors already built into the steering wheel? I doubt my 07 was built with this capability

  1. Is it advisable to simply hook up the cameras power wire to the reverse lights to ensure the monitor only comes on when shifted into reverse?

  1. What is the best way to route the video output from the rear bumper up into the dash?

  1. Does anyone recommend a wireless setup to avoid having to run the physical video output?
Thanks in advance everyone

For the camera power wires, yes, it is best to run them to the positive wire on a reverse light. Most backup cameras have two power wires; one to power the camera and the other to signal the head unit that car is in reverse.
I ran the wire through the frame using a long fish cable. I also covered the wire with plastic wire loom.
I don't know about wireless setup. I did my camera install a few years ago, and at that time the reviews on wireless cameras were not good.

Thanks for the response. I'm still a bit confused though....if you ran the positive power wire to the backup lights and you also ran the video feed wire to the head unit, what other wires did you run (if any). My understanding is that once the camera is powered up via the connection to the reverse lights and a signal is sent via the video feed, that's all that is necessary to trigger the head unit to go into camera mode and provide video. Do I have this correct?

My cam had two separate power wires; one fed the head unit to let it know the vehicle was in reverse and to switch to camera feed. The other powered the camera. I think best way to wire them is to tap into the reverse light, which activates both at the same time.
You will see several ways to wire these cams online. Many of these methods powers the camera all of the time which shortens camera life.
