04 2500 4x4 Cummins Trans comms issue
Hello everybody, new to the forum as I'm trying to figure out some issues with my trans.
I did search out and read a couple of threads that didn't quite exactly fit my description of trouble. So I thought I'd post as detailed as possible to get some ideas from the pros.
First, thanks in advance, I'm on a couple other forums and they are always helpful.
So, I'm the original owner of an '04, 2500, Laramie package, 4x4, H.O. Cummins with 362K miles
* 1st Tran rebuild was at 200K
* 2nd tran rebuild was at $310K
- reason being a warrantied part that busted, same shop fixed it that did the rebuild at 200K and said, while we are in there, we might as well... Friends shop and charged minimal (I was happy)
Now, at 362K miles my truck likes to kick out of OVERDRIVE and go into DRIVE (?) but my gauge will switch to read 2 (2nd gear)
* I know I'm not in 2nd gear at 60-65mph as my RPMs spike from 1800 up too 2400-2600 RPMs
I will shift into neutral, then back into OD and the transmission will find the right gear to be in. (Yes I had to do this while on the freeway a couple of times at speed)
Yes it does happen sometimes at lower, city street speeds
It did not happen today 12/18/20
It did happen 3 days ago on a 50 mile journey out to the MX track, where after I cycled it once, it didn't happen again. However it did happen 1 more time on the return home (another 50 miles) where I did cycle it once and had no issues the rest of the way.
* I'd say I was about 15-20 miles into the trip (warmed up???)
* Yes there's fluid
My friend who owns the Tranny shop had me bring it in. I, along with his tech took it for a drive, scanned it and the scanner says its shifting when its suppose too. BUT, the down shifting must be a communication issue, outside of the transmission... i.e.: computer etc....??
ALSO, sometimes the gear indicator on the cluster will not have a circle around what gear I'm in when I start her up. It will go into gear but I will either play with the column shifter until (P) is circled and then go into what gear is needed
*Seems like a loose wire if I were to try to explain it to child
NOTE: I did have the gauge cluster rebuilt as my mileage and gear indicator had not illuminated in over 3 years
I did have to send it back to that shop as when I got it back, they did not calibrate the speedo, the RPMs, and then I had door lock issues etc.... ELECTRICAL.
