Default Shift cable/transmission problem

I replaced the shifter cable on my 2005 ram 2500 and couldn’t get the new cable to fit properly. Thought I was doing something wrong, so had it towed to the dealer. They said the cable is too long and won’t fit properly and that could point to an issue in the transmission. Anyone have experience with something like this? I don’t understand how something broken in the transmission could affect the length of the cable.

What transmission do you have, and what is part number of the cable you bought?
The cable for the 5 speed transmission is about 5 inches longer than the cable for the 4 speed.

It’s the 4 speed. I don’t remember the part number, but the dealer and I had the same part number.

The cables I tried replacing seemed to be less than 5” too long if I remember correctly

thanks for the input
