That was a straight 3/8 drive extension, cut to length for pushing the hub out using the power steering.... worked fine on my 2nd gen a few years ago, not so good on the 3rd gen. Back to pounding and spraying pb blaster... or sacrifice another extension, probably 1/2 inch next time... course I'm doing it by myself, perhaps I need to find someone to turn the wheel while I watch what is going on... ugh

I tried that method with no success. Only thing that happened was I blew out my power steering pump, I had to replace that as well!

Perhaps I make a run to HarborFreight and get a sacrificial 3/8 extension set... Don't want to add a steering pump to the list of replacement parts!

Ball joints, hubs, new bushings for the track bar, and an entire 4th gen steering kit from moog that includes a different pitman arm - rockauto had a close out I couldn't resist... With the hubs going so slowly, I'm going to be at this for a couple days.

That upgraded steering component kit is a game changer! I’ve battled death wobble for years before I was in a small fender bender, and insurance replaced all of the steering components with the upgraded ones. That solved the death wobble for good!

At this point you should consider going to the torch or sawzall.
Are you replacing tie rods also? They'll never be the same after that much side load.

I have a lot of tools, but I don't have a Oxygen/Acetylene setup. I could try propane on the knuckle, but its pretty big - not sure I could apply enough heat to change anything.

The moog steering kit comes with everything and is the T style (4th gen style). Its part number DS800980A ... I got it for $260 shipped from RockAuto, it was a closeout sale.

I did this last year. I blocked the memory - it was such a pain in the ***. Replacing the u-joints, getting the hub off, the ball joints out - an exercise in patience. The 4th gen steering replacement was a huge improvement. I do remember pulling off the pitman arm with a tool specifically made for the job. I had to modify it with a grinder to make it work. Keep at it. Lots of youtube videos with different options for the hub. If I remember, there is one video where a guy tried five different methods before getting one to work.

I couldn't get back to it yesterday, probably today after work I'll give it another shot with someone else turning the wheel so I can watch what is going on. Decided to order one of these air chisel bits today. It will arrive tomorrow...

Amazon Amazon

I've lived in the rust belt all my life... so yeah, I've got the universal BFH too - all 5 lbs of it. I hit it so much the bearing started to separate - not good... so I had to stop trying hat method.

Got back to it a little tonight, that lisle #39250 impact hammer chisel is doing its job. Started to back off slowly, but after less than a minute of agitation, I could see the hub mount slightly back off the knuckle. Had to stop and find ear protection, that gets loud fast. I have some other things to do tonight, but have the next couple of days off ... so I'm thinking the next ugly job will be the ball joints.... I'm saving the pitman arm for last, the kit comes with a new one that is at a much different angle than the Y steering setup.
