Default Map LED light bulbs not working properly

After 17 years, one of my map light bulbs went out. I decided to replace both with new LED bulbs. They only work by clicking the plastic lens and that's IF the backseat dome light is on. Once the rear dome light fades out, the map lights go out. The map lights with LED bulbs do not turn on when the doors open.

Am I out of luck upgrading to LED bulbs unless I had some sort of resistor?

Since they do work sometimes, it's not a polarity issue, so it seems LED's may not be compatible.. Are they CANBUS LED's? That's the only thing I can think of. I had another make vehicle do that to me. LED's just were not compatible.

They're Sylvania LED Mini Bulbs (194SYLLED-2). Being 3rd generation, I think I am screwed unless I tweak it. I may just need to go with a basic bulb.
