Default 03 3.7L Engine VIN Location

I just got my truck back today from a shady mechanic. He has had it for 6 months and never finished it, giving one excuse after another. Finally had it and picked it up today and he swears he replaced the engine with a used short block. I originally brought it to him because of rod knock in the original engine and gave him $1200 to get the replacement. So after 6 months this is where it's at. I am needing to verify the engine currently in it is the OE, can I can pursue criminal/civil charges. I have searched google and various forums, including this one. Does anyone where to find the VIN on the engine? and should it match the VIN on the door jam is OE?
Thanks

Just got it back today, gotta install the upper intake, and replace the battery, not to mention the oil looks like chocolate milk. So is there anyway to decode numbers found on the engine to determine what vehicle and year it was originally in?

If the oil still looks like chocolate milk, then he didn't change anything. Get your money back. Take him to small claims if nothing else. Also, take PICS!!! And if you have a mechanic buddy, (that doesn't work at the same shop.....) have him look as well, and get a statement from him.
