Question Swapping EGR engine into a non EGR truck

Hey all, I'm a hoser when it comes to things like this so my apologies if it's a common question. I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with a blown 4.7 motor that doesn't have an EGR. I found a good deal on a 2005 motor that has an EGR, what would it take to make that EGR work in my truck? If I were to not plug it in and leave the valve closed would it cause any issues when trying to pass an emissions test? Also, if there are more differences between the 2004 and 2005 engines that I don't know about then please let me know. Thanks.

If your 2004 doesn't have it at all, then there is no provision in the PCM to use it. Block the EGR port(s) and call it a day.

And this won't cause any issues with emissions when I get it inspected? Only asking because I've seen some people mention it possibly causing problems with that.

Quick websearch says they do both the engine light check and two stage (rpm) tailpipe sniffer. I don't know texas, so you should validate that. If its correct, you'll need a pcm that will run the 5.7, and I'd choose one with a 2500 flash from a 2004 (I know first hand they didn't come with egr). If you get a PCM that wants the egr, they're not that hard to stick on there, just grab the right engine harness to accommodate. I'd put in new spark plugs and run a test on your short/long term fuel trims to make sure they're in spec - and you'll have no problem with the emissions check (assuming your cats are still working).

whoops, got confused... thought you were going with a 5.7 replacement... Don't know about the pcm details on a 4.7. Other stuff is applicable.

If you know for sure that your year doesn't have EGR, then it's a no brainer. Don't overthink it. Your PCM can't throw an EGR code if it isn't the programming. So long as you properly cap/plug the EGR ports (or you could just plug the port on the head and use your old intake manifold) it will act just like your original engine.....hopefully without the blowing up part.

Gotcha. Once again I'm not super knowledgeable on stuff like this so I wasn't sure exactly what all was different. I knew it wouldn't throw a code but wasn't too sure about the emissions test. Fingers crossed this one won't blow up.

I appreciate the extra info. I wasn't aware that they only do the OBDII test on vehicles produced after '96 until after I posted on here.

95 and earlier are OBDI. I am surprised they still do any testing on those at all. They are a bit long in the tooth.....
