Default 2004 dodge ram 1500 transmission comes out of overdrive in high gear.

Hello all,
My problem is stated in the title. If I pull over and turn engine off completely, wait a second or two, then restart truck and take off, the transmission will go back into overdrive. Sometimes it will stay and sometimes it will not. The temperature tends to affect how often it does it. The hotter it is outside, the more and the faster it will pop out of overdrive. The engine is the 5.7L hemi.

Thanks in advance!

Any codes? This sounds like what happens when the OD clutches are on their way out. Usually by that point you'll have at least P0700, P0734 & P0735.

I must apologize. I have not put any type of diagnostic indicator on the truck. Is that something that I can get done at O Reillys or Autozone? I will get that done today and get back to the thread later. I don't know how to check the temp of the fluid

Theoretically, if the trans is overheating, a light should come on in the dash......

I don't think overheating is the problem. It will kick out of overdrive sometimes only couple miles down the road

Would be interesting to do some data logging, and see what is happening when it drops O/D.
