Last week I had a low tire at work on my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 so I plugged my potable compressor into the 12v power outlet and while airing up the tire the compressor stopped working. I started the basic trouble shooting ( making sure the plug was in all the way, checked the fuse on the compressor) all was good. I plugged it into the cigarette lighter and it worked. I checked my fuses for the outlet and even though it was good I replaced it anyway and still doesn’t work. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be?

 

If it's old enough they sometimes just go bad and won't work. I've replaced a few over the years.

 

Thank you for the advice….. That is actually my next step because the wires powering it are good and have power to them so I will order one in.

 

Between the 2 1500s I've had in the family, both had at least one go out randomly. It's just one of those weird quirks with these trucks...

 

What happens if you plug the compressor into another car's 12V outlet? That would tell you if the issue is the compressor or your truck's outlets.

 

The compressor is good. It works when I plug it into my cigarette lighter and turn on the key.
issue has now been resolved with a new outlet
