Transfer Case herky-jerky issue
Hello Forum,
2007 2500 6.7 Diesel 4x4. I felt a herky-jerky front end shake, and am trying to troubleshoot it. When I feel this issue, I feel it banging underneath my seat, and it feels like the front end is hopping. It is very noisy, and shakes the whole truck. I was in 4WD at the time, making some turns, so I thought that it was the front end. I have jacked up the front end, and the U-joints and ball joints are all good. In trouble shooting, I find that it does this all the time in 4WD (so much now that I won't use it), and for a while in 2WD after I switch out of 4WD. At first, I was thinking that the T-case is not fully disengaging, but when I am underneath the truck, I can hear the solenoid go on and off when the dial is turned from 2WD to 4WD and then back, so I think that is good. I thought that it might be a joint on the front drive shaft, and from visible inspection, it looks good. I did try to remove the front driveshaft, but I broke the T-35 bit on the front yoke, so will have to try again tomorrow to see if the joints are all in good condition. The last thought that I have is that the Transfer case itself is binding, or grinding causing the hopping and banging.
I am looking to see if I can find troubleshooting the Transfer case online, but am just getting into it. I am wondering if the Front Driveshaft is driven by a chain, and if there could be an idler pulley that is binding. My hydrostatic-drive hay mower had one of the drive chain idler pulleys come loose, and the chain was binding upon itself, and made similar noises.
Any insight into things I could look for? Am I going to need a new Transfer case?
Thanks for listening.
John

How many miles on it?
If you are on a high-traction surface, the hopping and banging is normal, and a precursor to things breaking. Might try getting all four wheels off the ground, trans in neutral, t-case in 2wd, and try and turn the front shaft by hand.... see if it is binding.
