My 3 rd generation airbags suspension?

I just bought a 3rd generation dodge1500 why does it have airbag suspension in the rear and are they needed? Are the leaf springs not sufficient?

How can you tell if it's factory or a add on?

I'm not seein' 'em in any of the factory parts listing, so, my guess would be "aftermarket".
