It doesn't matter when you change over to synthetic, I changed to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic with a K&N Filter at 2300 miles and change it every 5k miles.

actually it does...or at least for the break in period. Do not change over to synthetic at 500 miles...wait AT LEAST until after 2k-3k when the motor is finally broken in for the most part. All depends on your driving style too.....

I was also told...by the dealer...not to switch over to synthetic on my new bike until after 3k miles.

some cars have exceptions...such as the ones that come from the factory with sythetic (My M3 uses Castrol Synthetic 10w-60 from the factory.)

Where the hell would you find that? I guess it is just another way to have the customer spend big bucks at the dealership!![:@] I didn't even know that Castrol made that weight.

at any rate...yea...only way I have ever gotten it is through BMW....Although I have BMW do ALL of the maintenance on the car.....I stock at least 2 quarts of the stuff in case I need to add oil. 13.50 a quart!!!

Castrol ONLY makes the 10w-60 for the BMW M3 (01-05) I think a BMW dealer is the ONLY place you can get it.

The bottle has BMW M3 logo on it and is a completely different look then the normal castrol bottles you would find at pep boyz or whatever.

My mothers X5 uses BMW Castrol Synthetic 5w-30

this is what the castrol page says as of now.

thats because this oil is NOT available from any parts stores....castrol makes the oil for BMW and you HAVE to pay the prices that BMW charges.....anywhere between 12.50-14.00 for a quart.....thats why an oil change on my M3 costs around 110 bucks.

I've been running Mobil 1 tri-synthetic, as well as Mobil 1 filters since the truck hit 3000 miles. I'm now at 12,000 miles, and the truck runs great. I've run Mobil 1 in all my other cars in the past 8 years. I won't use anything else.

Modern day engines do not need a break in period, they are fine from the manufacturer. Now there is a break in period needed for the tranny and drivetrain, but not the engine. It is fine to go to synthetic after the 500 miles that the manufacturer recommends.
