06 Question - towing mode, AOD modes and locking torque converter
Ok I have the 5 speed auto with my TRX4. On the shifter you can run AOD off, then shift into towing mode with AOD on, then into towing mode with AOD off and finaly back into non-towing AOD on (no lights on).
What is this towing mode?
When in AOD am I running as a 3 speed auto or a 4 speed auto?
Now my bill of sale says I have a locking torque converter, does that have something to do with the towing mode? If not what does the locking converter do? (I also have LSD)

Unless they went with a radically new design for the 06 there is just the tow/haul button at the end of the gear selector. What it does is lock out overdrive and alter the shift points. You should be able to push the tow/haul button and a tow/haul icon should pop up on the dash, then you know it is on.
As far as how many gears you'll end up having, I'm not sure. I say this because when I was towing my parents' boat to the lake it dropped to normal highway RPM once I was at 65mph or so, but wouldn't change gears unless I really mashed on the throttle (in Tow/Haul mode).
Bottom line, if you're towing a small utility trailer, I normally don't worry about the tow/haul mode. Anything over 1K pounds or so and I normally turn on the T/H mode. This prevents tranny heat up by switching gears faster and holding gears longer to keep the back and forth gear hunting from making the fluid temp skyrocket.
My MPG with a 4500-5000 boat (total pkg wt) I got like 13mpg on the highway at 65-70mph over 150 miles or so.

I press the button once and it turns AOD off (AOD light comes on). Press it again and the AOD light goes off and the Tow light comes on. Press it again and I get the AOD off light back on AND the Tow light. Press it one more time and both lights go off.
Maybe its cause I have a 5 speed auto it works like this?

They probably did this to get rid of the gear hunting as the pre 06 545-RFE have just a tow/haul that allows OD to be activated. They did have a computer flash that got rid of this, though. Very interesting info about the new programming of the OD/Tow/Haul mode.
TOW/HAUL IS LATER SHIFT POINTS BUT ALSO HAS 4TH GEAR AT HIGHER RPM'S/SPEED. FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE.O/D LIGHT THERE IS NO 4TH GEAR OR LOCK-UP, WHEN YOU DRIVE WITH TRANS IN NORMAL OPERATION AT WHAT RPM AND SPEED DO YOU FEEL THE TRANS HIT FINAL GEAR AND LOCK-UP

HAY JOE ,MY 5 SPEED SHIFTS 2ND 18 MPH, 3RD 27 MPH, 4TH 50 MPH, FINAL LOCK VARIES ,BETWEEN 55-65 MPH, THIS SEEMS LATE TO ME. I HAD 04 RAM WITH 5 SPEED AND HEMI AND IT SHIFTED SOONER.

OK I goofed. I could have sworn there was a mode where the OD was off and towin mode was on but it isn't. You hit the button and towing mode comes one. Hit it again and OD is off. Hit the button a 3rd time and your in normal 5 speed AOD mode again.
I did not check the shift points. But I have seen my RPM maintain 1300 RPM while doing anywhere from 35MPH to 55! When doing 65 my RPM is 1500. I get good gas milage on the freeway!
