1) When you have a vehicle that weighs 6000+ lbs, and try moving it with a 3.55 gear It take more effort (FUEL) from the engine... You can move the same weight with less effort with the 4.56's.

2) 4.56 x .67 = 3.05... this is your overall rear gear.... NOT BAD... This is a HIGHWAY combo afterall!

3) You have 30"+ tall tires and a .67 overdrive... back untill late 80's the best you had was 26" tall tires and 1:1 transmission ratio which gives you a 4.56 gear..... This is where 4.56's would KILL YOU! BUT by adding the 30's and .67 OD you get that 3.05 gear ratio for teh HIGHWAY and the 4.56 GRUNT of the line for towing and just getting your FAT @$$ truck moving with less effort.

In the end the 4.56's work for the 3rd Gen RAM because of the 30" tall tires and that .75 (2002) / .67 (2003-2006) overdrive.

Again ... DONT FEAR THE GEAR!

The only dumb question, is the one not asked.

It is the rear axle ratio.
