Now that I'm totally confused, my son has a 2004 4.7 with the standard stock gears, I have a 2002 4.7 that I ordered with 3.92 gears, his fuel mileage on the highway is better than mine. So I still don't see how going to a lower gear ratio 4.56 will improve mileage. Someone's math is way off.. I have more traction when I nail it, he spins the tires.. This relates to my other post,, lower gears better traction - worse fuel mileage, higher gears, less traction - better fuel mileage. I 'm only going on what I have seen and calculated..
You could have different driving habbits, location CITY/HIGHWAY.. there are other veriables that come into play. have you tried to swap trucks for a few weeks to see if there was any difference. In most cases its the other way around. Also if your getting poor fuel ecomey you may want to get it looked at ... you should be getting better fuel economey then him... because you have the .67 overdrive to his .75... and the math is way RIGHT!

Yours has the 45RFE with the .75 overdrive and 3.92's... this gives you a 2.94 overall gear ratio.

Hey Ray, I just did the math again... your son has a 2004 with a 545RFE 75/67 OD and what rear gear?
If he has the:

3.55's
3.55x. 75/.67= 2.66/2.37

3.92's
3.92x.75/.67= 2.94/2.62

Im willing to bet you both have the 3.92 rear gears... if not then there are other factors between the way your trucks are set up and driven.

Transmission gear x rear gear = overall gear ratio

You need to add "DODGETALK" in place of the **** because this site does not let us post links to other forums... Kinda stupid if you ask me... This is the only site that does not let you post a link to another forum.... Children in charge I guess!

There is not a single MPG test in any of those posts
just someone making wild claims
with no facts.

So say I enjoy smoking a good import at the light now and again, should I stick with 3.92 or upgrade to a 4.56?

Take a look at those links I posted... they will lead you to MANY others who have made the plunge to 4.56's. Now Hank will try to lead you to beleive these people REALLY do not see gains.... but if you ask them they will tell you exactly what they are getting. Agian can in fact get 21+ MPG when I want with the 4.56's and my 2002 45RFE (.75) overdrive... those with the 2003-UP 545RFE (.75/.67) may see slightly better results than I do.
