I might be completely wrong on this one, but check the rear springs. I think my friend was talking about that and was told that the rear springs are from the 1500 and that determines the weight you can put in the bed. This weight is what classifies the truck as a 1500. Hopefully someone else knows for sure because I'm not.
I believe you are right. Springs are the largest determining factor but I believe some components of the suspension and brakes will be different as well like the shocks. Maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in.
yes, the axels are the same, infact the frame is the same on the mega cab 1/2/3500's
the only real difference is the suspension and parts of the drive line.
so how you likeing that solid front axel AAM 9.5

great truck traded my 05 q cab 2wd in on it ,talked to sevice and was told that srings are new and not from 1500, basicaly 3/4 ton minus 1 spring and the badging from the body down suspension is identical to 3/4 ton 4x4, brakes ,shocks springs front he told me i can already get the spring for rear if i need it. and he said the tow rating is way underated so is the gvwr so that it can be sold as 1500 told me treat it like 3/4 ton and i will be fine,,

I too just today traded my 05 Ram shown in me pic for a 06 1500 SLT Mega Cab 4x4. I have a good relationship with the service manager at the dealer that I bought the truck from and asked if he could poke around. He told me bascially what these thread mention. Some small differences in the suspension but the 1500 Mega cab sits on the same frame as does the 2500.
I suggest taking a look at the manual and www.dodge.com/towing.
However, I prefer to still consider weights for my families sake; safety, while towing our 7k GVW travel trailer. In fact, the first stretch of the legs was from the dealers parking lot to a Cat scale.
With myself, wife and 2 of 3 kiddies and a full tank of gas it came in at 7060lbs 4080 on the steer axle and 2980 on the drive axle.
Coincidentally, you gotta love that 2.9 % (could get 0.0% but payment was too much).
Good luck .... I already love mine !!!
