Default Rear end

Just wondering what the syptoms are for when the rear end starts to go. I have been having random clunks here and there. I am hoping to get the rear end done before I hit 70 K miles, I am at 62 K right now. I need to be prepared with all the info you guys know so I can prevent the dealer brush off. I don't think I can replicate the sound, it happens fairly infrequently. Will they crack it open and look or do they need to KNOW that the rear end is going before they will do anything about it? What is the actual part that is breaking called, its a ring that gets loose and chews everything up right?

The clunking should get worse with Speed. Do you do a lot of burnuouts? Sometimes, the ring gear may lose teeth and cause that clunking around. Could also be the Universal Joints, and possibly the yolk or bearing. Best way is to find a strait road, and bring a friend along. Have him drive slowly, something you can walk near the rear. Listen for it, and try and pin point where it is coming from.

Go to the dealer and ask them. Tell them the rear is clunking, and that they need to pull the diff. cover to see what it is. Make a stink if you need to, but it should be done. They might need to take it for a ride to make sure the sound is actually there. But, it's better then having the rear go. If not, see about getting the diff oil changed. Watch them as they do it, and tell them to inspect the rear while its off.

Either way, the dealer should do something.

I only hear this sound when it is sitting still or when i am just starting to go (not WOT). I think it happens when I have the wheel turned all the way and I am pulling into a spot. I am def not hearing this clunk all the time, just occasionally. I guess I will just wait until the thing gets worse. No, I don't do a lot of burn outs but I do like to launch the thing on the green light fairly often. I never tow anything and the heaviest load is some sandbags in the back for the snow traction. Is it possible to get the rear diff oil changed by the dealer free of charge or would they hand me a bill if there is nothing wrong once they get the pumpkin open?

When Mine went it just started to whine... as soon as it started I took the cover off to find the clutch pack retaining clip stuck to the magnet. They did cover it under warrenty even though I had the 4.56's installed... they just re-installed my ruined 4.56's as those where not covered. If I had the original 3.55's they would have replaced those.
