The thing about gm trucks is that as long as your talking about a 1/2 ton truck with a 5.3 or larger V8 can be pretty quick. But I know a lot of people with the 3/4 ton gm trucks with any of thier V8's who say thay are dogs. I have a mechanic friend out in Forney Tx. who does a lot of performance work as well as general mechanical. He say's that he sees a lot of newer vehicles, gm and others that come into his shop with owners wanting turbo's and super chargers.
The thing is you have to strictly maintain these vehicles with oil changes and such or they don't last. Sometimes even if you do they end up knocking or smoking. He sees it all the time.
You have to treat our trucks for what they are, trucks. They are not high performance vehicles, and if you pressurize them and start beating on them they won't last long.
This guy's name is Russ Garber, a great guy and a damn good mechanic, has a 2000 something Chevy reg cab with a 5.3 V8 with one of those rear mounted turbo's and an intercooler. The engine has over 100K on it and runs great, but he know's it's going to break.
But he's got a shop with a lift and everything and doesn't have to pay someone to rebuild it when he does.

the gm engines have been very reliable in my experience. Gm is not trying to make their trucks hot rods. it just isnt cost effective. They are having a hard enough time selling cars and trucks enough as it is. The engines provided are "tuned down" for the simple fact that not everyone that buys one is wanting to race from stoplight to stoplight or take it to the strip. every vehicle they produce has been geared for the avg driver. that is why cars like the corvette cost so much or the 6.1 srt's for that matter and even they have vast amounts of untapped potential that the factory will not give you.

I would not buy a GM vehicle,
but it should be realized that
Bob Lutz - who when he worked at Chrysler was the 'father'
of the Viper (after Carroll Shelby suggested it),
the aluminum and iron V10,
the 1994 Ram design,
and started the long process that resulted in the 5.7 Hemi
- that same Bob Lutz is now
(and has been for 5 yrs)
the vice president at GM in charge of the GMT900 truck redesign.

Walter P Chrysler had been the president of Buick when he left to take over what was the Maxwell Motor Company.

Henry Ford II said "I fired that damn little greek"
Coal miner George Love - largest shareholder in Chrysler - said "I hired that damn little greek"
and both were talking about Lee Iacocca (designer of the Ford Mustang and later savior of Chrysler)
