Default Is this Right? Please help

I called for an estimate to put some 4.10s in my 4.7 QC 1500. The guy tells me the bearings will need to be replaced no matter what, even though my truck is brand new and only has 3000 miles on it. He also said he will never do aftermarket gears because they will make all kinds of noise and I will hate the truck. He told me it would be close to $1000.00 in labor alone for the time it takes his guy to set the gears up. He said drive the truck, leave the 17" rims on and enjoy, the gears will probably go around 25,000 miles anyway. He said that is when I should then think about maybe changing the gears. I am totally confused. Please any advice would be helpful my brothers and sisters. [sm=dontgetit.gif]

Find another shop. Quality aftermarket gears will not make noise if set up properly. It is when the backlash is not set properly that the gears make noise. I would guess that labor should be less than half what he quoted, unless it is a 4x4. A 4wd vehicle will require changing out the front and rear gearing at the same time. Defintely time to find another drivetrain shop.

Yup, what osteodoc said.

Labor should be around 300 per diff.

Sounds like another case of "Price it so high, the customer won't want it done" The guy obviously didn't know what he is talking about!

Is there anybody in Florida that can give hockeynut52 a quality shop to go to??

I wonder how this guy stays in business if he treats everyone this way.[sm=confused06.gif]

I was thinking the same thing DCX. There has to be a good performance shop here in Ft. Lauderdale. If this was a motorcyle I would attempt the gears my self. Smaller gears less intimidation, I think I could do the install myself, but there are so many special tools involved. Besides if it gets screwed up I would only be able to yell at me and what fun would that be. [sm=badbadbad.gif]

Yeah Hockeynut52, I agree with everyone else... your "gear guy" sounds like an idiot or someone who simply does not want to do the job. Find a different shop!!!

like someone said...that guys an idiot... buy yur gears yurself... I did at Randys Ring and Pinion http://www.ring-pinion.com/... my budy bought the U.S. 4.56's and i bought Yukon 4.56's, he bought the min install kit while I got the Master Overhaul kit. I got the master because i have 41K on my truck. The place that did our installs told my budy his bearings were fine so he didn't get his changed. Our install cost each of us $250.00..
