Just changed my oil yesterday... used Mobil 1 synthetic oil with a standard Fram filter, but I do use a FilterMag (http://www.filtermag.com/) on the oil filter and transmission pan. Used the owners manual's recommendation of 5w-20 in my '05 Hemi QC.

The only synthetics from the factory that I know of is the diff fluid. I'm not sure of the ATF, it is either semi or complete synthetic. I think he was referring to the 5w/20 being per factory spec.

i know the manual says 5w-30 and that's why i used it ... but i was wondering if since i live in an area that gets pretty damn hot during the summer if i should step up to 10w-30 just for the summer months ... either way i already changed it ... went with mobil 1 5w-30

Page 332 of my owners manual for my '04 Ram 5.7L has a chart that clearly shows 5W-30 for all temperaures and 10W-30 for temps above 0°F. It almost never gets below 0°F here in central PA, so I run the 10W-30. From what I see listed in other posts, Dodge must have changed to the thinner 5W-20 recommendation starting with the '05 -- most likely to try to meet CAFE requirements.

Sorry about the mix-up. Spec is 5-20w in my 06 Hemi Ram (non MDS). Our trucks came with non-synthetic ie. crude oil. Swithing to synthetic should make your trucks motor last as long as you own it. I am going to change my synthetic oil every 5000 miles. The oil will not be broken down but the oil filter needs changed reguarless of synthetic or crude. I ran synthetic in my last Ram and at 110k miles it never used any oil between changes. The motor ran like new.

I thought ALL the 1500 06 models had MDS? Nevermind, just saw you have a 2500.
