Hemi Computer Mods
Hi....this is an impressive web site. I have a 2004 Hemi and I have questions concerning the computer that regulates everything on a Dodge truck. I hope some American "engineer" or "performance" advocate can answer them. Why is it that no one can come up with a programmer that can adjust fuel/air ratios, timing, and etc. for Hemi owners? I replaced my stock exhaust system with long tube headers and the stock air system with a cold air one. The first thing happened was the LIGHT came on the dash board. The codes state that my oxygen sensors are wacky because of the increase in air flow....and no one can help me with this. I have been waiting for Predator or Hypertech or anyone so that I can adjust the air/fuel ratio. I have noticed on some web sites that Hemi owners have switched to another performance cam.....and from my experience with mods......a cam will require timing and air/fuel ratio adjustments. So, how are they getting by with this?
Why is it that Ford and Chevy have programmers that do all sorts of miracles on the computers? My son purchased a Predator for his Cobra and WOW did the motor come alive. When I view the specs for Hemi programmers....they are NOTHING in comparison to Ford and Chevy products. Why?
I can not understand with all the great computer minds in America that one can not make a programmer for the Hemi fans. Maybe the computer for Hemi's are too difficult to crack and we need to consult with a Japanese engineer?
I drive to Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and all over TExas and I see nothing but Hemi's. Could it be that Americans are discrimminating against MOPAR Hemi? Please someone out there give me a solid...rationale explanation to why top programmers such as Diablosports, Hypertech, and other companies will not make a product to "release the beast."

Welcome. I can't comment on the timing and air fuel ratios. BUT, I put a Superchips programmer on my Hemi and it made a big difference. I already had a CAI and exhaust, and the programmer just made everything better. Superchips has a dyno sheet on their website for the Flashpaq 3815, and while the dyno gains are moderate, don't be deceived. The biggest difference is that it holds gear longer. For example, going onto the freeway I floored it, and it holds 3rd gear up to about 70 - so the throttle response is awesome. Just cruising around is the same, its MUCH MUCH easier to get into the sweet spot of the RPM range with the Superchips programmer.
I am not that familiar with Hypertech or Jet. I heard Superchips was the best, so that is the one I bought. It definitely wakes the motor up - you would probably notice a bigger difference in your truck, than I did in mine (QC Hemi 4x4).

Thanks sandiegohemi...by the way, i have been in san diego several times....beautiful place and awesome rides too! I never seen so many Vipers in one location....thanks for the info too. i've learned that the folks in san diego know their performance stuff...my son owns a cobra with a kenne bell system that produces over 900 horses.....the speed shops in san diego helped him with his first mustang gt.....
i purchased a jetperformance chip 2 and it was a big waste of money.....i tested the performance with and without it and discovered that my performance was better w/o it....tonight, i just discovered www.ststurbo.com and now thinking about purchasing it....however, i discovered from a mopar representive that works on hemi's in north carolina that the hemi is notorious for bad valve springs and damaging the tips of spark plugs....the problem is easily corrected by replacing the heads......i also recall during the muscle car days that the heads were weak on hemi's to begin with.....the life expectancy of the heads were about 50000 miles....but what the hey....no one cared because of the high performance and what a small sacrifice to make for a affordable stock hot rod....
when i launch off the line....my hemi is left in second gear.....the tranny automatically drops into first and switches into second....my second gear shifts out at 75 mph.....my top end is 110 mph.....the computer shuts it off....
since i purchased the hemi....the second day...it would just die at 20 mph or at a dead stop......i informed mopar about this but they did not respond back.....on cool days....the hemi runs great w/o any problems....however, on warm days 82 degrees....after I do a quick spurt up to 90 miles an hour and then stop at a red light....the hemi dies........i don't know why.......but it has something to do with the heat......at idle....and dead stop.....i place my foot on the gas until the rpm gauge goes up to 800 rpms....i let off the gas pedal and the rpm rests at 600 rpms.....with the a/c off......if i don't do this trick.....the truck idles at 500 rpms....and dies during warm days....i don't use 89 octane gas....in south texas we have 93 octane......i noticed in san diego that supreme gas is 91 octane.
thanks for the info and i will consider your advice on the hypertech.....

Yeah San Diego is a great town! Lots of rides down here as well, all types of performance shops from speedshops to offroading. But, there is an overabundance of 2WD trucks with 8" lifts (what's the point?).
I haven't had any problems with the truck dying as you mentioned. I'd have it looked at for good measure. You are right, the highest octane here in CA is 91.

I have the hypertech tuner and it works great. Right know I only have the CAI but the exhaust is on order and should be here soon(fingers crossed). My engine is the 5.9l gas, but the tuner definately woke the engine up! Air ram has a "power Wire" that will help increase the fuel rate to your engine as well and its only $30. You might check that out too. http://www.airram.com/index.html
I just looked at hypertech dyno sheets 04 Hemi +12 HP +24 FT/LBs Torque.
My 03 5.9l +17 HP +33 ft/lbs.
They also can be tuned to 87 octane fuel or 91 with hypertech.

There is a piggyback we use on the hemi's. It's the SMT-6 by perfect power. It doesn't change the pcm, it fools it by changing the crank signal clicks and the map sensor voltages.
The sts turbo guys are using it instead of the old 9th injector setup that came with the earlier sts turbo kits. The smt allows us to use larger injectors and be able to tune a/f and timing.

I've had the smt6 and superchips tuner on my turbo setup for about a year now. And about 3 months ago, I switched to the 8 large injectors with 2 bar map sensor and removed the auxilary injector setup. Now it runs like it came from the factory with a turbo.
Disclaimer : ** Do not run superchips with your turbo setup. I have done tons of monitoring and testing. **

would running 93 octane without a computer adjustment for the increased octane have anything to do with it? I just got my flashpaq today but it says i need to have 91 in it before I set any performance settings...
