Default Help, need better MPG, best tune option?

Hey, just found the forum. I have an 05 Ram 3/4 ton with the 5.7L Hemi. The problem I am having is that when I tow my camper I only get 10 MPG. This truck is my daily driver and in the winter it is my plow truck. I am just looking for the best tune to gain some MPG. Also what else have you guys done with your tunes besides gas mileage? What else could I do to gain on daily driving, plowing, and towing? I was considering Hypertech but don't have experience with them, was also considering a mail order tune. Thanks in advance for any help.

Trading it in on a diesel would help the MPG. Either than that, it takes a lot of fuel to push around a 3/4 ton with only 375 ft. lbs of torque and a camper.

I have the Superchips programmer, and to be honest, I don't think you will save one extra gallon of fuel with it. It makes the truck perform better, but with better performance, comes more fuel consumption, which means less MPG. It is a viscious cycle.

May as well give up on the super mileage on your truck. 10mpg while towing is really not that bad depending on the trailer weight and terrain.

4.56s are the way to go...You will be able to tow more with less effort... and when your not towing you will get better fuel economey from 0MPH-75MPH... 4.56's are a win win mod. There is NO negative side effect to the 4.56's unless you drive CONSTANT 85-90MPH... in that case you would need to look into 4.10's.

DONT FEAR THE GEAR!

Thanks for the posts guys, wasn't expecting lucrative gains. I was just trying to see if there was a tuner (handheld or mailorder) that would give me a couple extra miles out of a tank. I don't want to change the gears because of my warranty, but thanks for the input. Will keep that in mind when the warranty runs out......

will the 4.56s be a good mod for a 2003, 2500, 5.7L with 4x4?

Does the 4x4 matter if you are going to switch to 4.56s gears?

What gear ratio does it currently have?

12mpg isnt bad at all. You would get that with a diesel. A 3/4 ton truck is a big animal with alot of extra metal under its skin.

I still don't understand this... Even with the ~ .73 overdrive, if you increase your gears from say 3.92 up to 4.56, your RPM's at the same speed are going to increase, therefore increasing fuel consumption. With 3.92 gears, and 60MPH, I think my rpms sit somewhere around 1750rpm... If I swapped out my 3.92's for some 4.56's I can only imagine that my rpm's would be somewhere up around 2750.... How can that DECREASE fuel consumption?
