Thank you very much, Gone Fishin. I actually contemplated engineering school prior to medical school. Even though I don't regret it, I still love to get my hands dirty. Plus as a student, money is tight and I'd rather do my own work and save the money.

Didn't mean to leave out the 2500/3500 guys. Yes, you don't need friction modifier for those axles.

Also the front differential for you 4x4 guys requires a regular 75w/90 GL-5 oil, not the 75W/140 synthetic that the rear does. If I left anything else out, please feel free to add to it.

Doc, that is a SEXY purple hand. Nice work on the write-up, I plan on doing mine the next time. Any suggestion on intervals?

Yeah, I guess I should have had a manicure done so that I could be a hand model for a day, but just decided to wear some nitrile gloves instead! The manual states to change out the oil every 15K miles, at least for the B schedule.

Thanks to you I did my own Differential service today. The dealer wanted $150. I saved about $100 doing it my self. It was alot easier than I thought. Thanks again.

Bare in mind that the dealers and the lube specialty shops do not pull the cover to drain the old fluid. Instead they vacume, (syphon) the fluid out through the fill hole.

It's the same process as Doc outlined, but like you say, the fluid vis is different--check your manual for your application, plus obviously no friction modifier. Also, I've found the front to be a little more of a PITA due to the closeness of the front end and not as much room to work, but it's not enough of an issue to not do it yourself as well.

Doc did a great job...only thing I'd add is to get a long plastic filler tube that's made to attach to the lube bottles for filling. It's pretty messy without one and makes it alot easier to get the stuff in. Also, a last tip for us guys in the north--don't forget and leave the lube out in the truck overnight in cold weather. This stuff's a lot thicker than normal motor oil and needs to be warm to pour.

Hey Mill500, I was actually going to suggest a fill tube, but I had no problem with just snipping the end off of the Mobil container and squeezing it in.
