I visited Royal Purple's website and must admit, it had caught my interest. I've always been a user of Mobil-1 and so far have no complaints.
Can someone tell me the price of Royal Purple? I'm curious how it stacks up to Mobil-1.
Thanks in advance,
H.H.

Price depends where you buy it. Mobil-1 can be had for around $4/qt in 5 qt jugs at Wal-Mart. The Royal Purple 5W20 API SL service oil I got for around $5.8/qt in a 5 gal container from an eBay seller (KRP Racing).
I've been using Mobil-1 5W20 since 2,000 miles and tried RP at 13,000. I'm waiting for my UOA for the first 3,000 mi change on RP (15k on the truck) to see how it compares with M1. From an mpg perspective I've achieved 18.1 mpg on RP and 18.0 mpg on M1--same trip, speed, and weather conditions. RP is noticeably thicker in the winter, but M1 is known to be a very thin oil--often at the bottom end of the viscosity scale from my UOAs. Winter mpgs averaged 13 mpg w/RP and 14 mpg w/M1. We'll see how the viscosity and wear readings compare in a few days.
IMHO, M1 or RP are proably around the same in terms of wear and mpg. But, the price and availabilty of M1 is hard to beat. If you like a bit thicker oil, then RP is something to consider.

Well, I finally got my UOA report on my Royal Purple 5W20 oil change. As suspected, the wear measurements were virtually the same as Mobil-1. The copper wear was significantly greater, but that could just be an anomally--these UOAs are often plagued with outliers. The only real advantage of RP over M1, is that it made the engine significantly quieter. Much less ticking sounds. This applies to my Toyota Higlander as well. So it appears you can't go wrong with either. I've included my latest UOA for comparison. Please Note, the first oil change was Exxon Superflow 5W20. The others were M1 5W20. And, the last was RP 5W20.
