Default grinding vibration in steering column

i have a 2005, 1500 dodge ram, 2wd.........
going less than 5 miles per hour, can feel a vibration in the steering column when i turn left. like when i pull out from a dead stop.
dont feel anything on higher speeds. a friend of mine said he always had some sort of alignment or suspension problem in his older ram 1500.... balljoint?...wheel bearing?...tie-rod? car doesnt pull, alignment seems ok. getting wear on outside of tire. camber off?
anyone felt this vibration? cant really hear it but can feel a crunch or grind in the steering wheel

When you describe the "grind", it makes me think that there is metal on metal. I have that at the moment caused by salt. My inner rotor has some rust on it and it causes what you've described...of course, that's my situation....I'm just throwing that out there for you to ponder on.. Take your hand and feel both side of the inner rotor just to make sure...wouldn't hurt.

Glenn,

You should post over in the Ram, 3rd Gen section. That's you best place for getting answers to your problems. Maybe one of the moderators will move it over there for you.

Good luck on getting it figured out.

James

Hello! I have the same grinding in the steering column! My '04 Hemi Quadcab (25,000 miles) is at the dealer right now for this problem and a leaking pinion seal. I initially thought it was a warped front rotor or a rubbing brake pad. I had the brakes checked at a local reputable shop. No problem with the rotors. The shop thought it was possibly the power steering pump. I've had this same problem since it was new. It was sporadic at first, but now its very noticeable. If the dealer actually comes up with a solution, I'll post it.

I've had the same problem. They replaced the PS pump and it didn't help. I also have a popping type of noise when turning, but I don't know if it is related or not. They regreased the stops, but that hasn't helped. I'm still puzzled. It sucks, because I don't have the time to keep bringing it to them to let it sit all day without the problem fixed.

Anyone know what the problem is with the steering. I feel a shudder when turning left to.
The dealer already replaced the steering pump. I am taking it in tommorow for the pinion seal.

It's been a while, but I'm back!!! I just moved outside of Clermont, FL. Lovin it so far.

I went to Clermont Dodge, the sister store to where I bought my truck, and the service tech says he is going to try to see if he can replace the rack and pinion and the steering pump together. Supposedly if the steering pump goes bad, the metal shaving tear up the R&P, so it is better to replace the whole system as opposed to a vicious cycle of part failures due to each other. I've already had the power steering pump replaced, but it didn't help. Hope the R&P and PSP combo works. I'l keep you guys informed, I just put it in the shop this AM and finally got the internet up and running at the my new house.

Just to update everyone, Clermont Dodge replaced the PS pump and the vibration went away. Perhaps the first PS pump replaced was defective? The steering is now quick and light, not to mention vibration free!. Gonna have to get used to the steering again, especially when I'm doing slow speed manuevers, the steering wheel is nice and light, not gritty and heavy like it was before.

next time, try and check your power steering fluid every 3000 miles. This will stop the pump from running low or also loosing pressure. Both of these do damage so keep up with the maintanence. Good luck all of you with your problems.
Cheers

Check your steering lower intermediate shaft. there are 2 U-joints that can cause a binding in your steerind. my 02 durango was just in the shop, for what they thought was the steering rack. Turns out it was the shaft. They greased it, binding gone.
