Default Check Engine light / Icon

Started the 03 1500 Quad cab 4.7 4x4 up to come home from the lake and the check enging icon can on. Ran fine, all gauges are fine. Is there a self diagnostic that can be run for basic codes? How about the proper way to clear a code? Perhaps a scan tool is required for that? Any help is appreciated.

i belive that you can read the code by getting in the truck taking the key and turning the ignition on (not starting, to the point where to a/c controls work and gauges work) do that three times and that i belive should tell you the code, when done come here and well try to help tell you what code it is!

it will show code where the odometer is!

P0456 Couldnt find this specific code but appears from reading here its a common one likely from the gas cap. Checked it out so will see what happens. Is there any way to clear it rather then wait for key cycles?

um an old school way would be to disconnect the battery for about ten minutes and then re attach! just disconnect the negative side and then reattach the negative after ten or so minutes..

I looked up the p code and it is the evaporative emmisions small leak problem. I would be willing to bet, that if you look at the rubber hoses to and from the charchol canister, You will most likely find one cracked. It has happened to a number of others here also. The fix is to replace the hoses, then take the truck to Autozone and have them plug in a scanner and clear the DTC code. If it is what i think, it will get worse and a po455 code will come up (bigger leak). You can reset it by diconnecting the battery, but then you start all over with the fuzzy logic of the computer figuring out your driving style, and of course, if its not fixed, it will come up again.

Hope this helps.

Ok, this is my first post on the board, so I hope I can pass along some CORRECT information... I just bought my 03 quad cab a couple of weeks ago. JUST after singing the papers and getting 1/4 mile down the road MY check engine light came on[:@]. I went back to the used car dealership that sold me and they said that they would make it right and have the car fixed (at their expense). They were very nice about it and after 2 weeks of going back and forth withthe CHEVY dalership (the dealership I bought the truck from was a derivative of Chevrolet) they sent me to the Dodge dealership. They pulled up that exact code and they said that it would cost 258.07to fix (I didn't have to pay that, the Chevy dealership that I bought the truck from did!!!) They said that if you look under the truck about mid ways there is a sensor that picks up if there is anleak in the tank or something. There is a rubber hose that comes from that sensor and runs to the gas tank. this hose had a small crack in it that was causing the sensor to light up. They changed the hose and the sensor and put a new hose and leak detection pump on. (They also charged 255.09 in labor). The parts costed 42.59. Long story short (finally) the light hasn't come on yet. Hope that I was able to help.

While we're on codes, I'm getting P0116 on my '03 4x4, hemi. Anyone know what that is?? I only get the check engine light with nothing else. Truck seems to be running fine.
