Tell me about the Infinity system in my 04 Ram
(I posted this in the A/V forum as well, but not much activity over there).
I am new to Dodge and I am curious about the Inifinity system in my 04 Ram QC. I have done many searches, but there seem to be differences in the info. I know it has 7 speakers and there is a factory amp for at least the front door speakers. I also know it doesn't sound too good. Unclear highs and muddy bass. It is better at mid or low volume, but higher volumes sound worse.
- Which speakers are factory amp'd?
- What are the sizes of the door speakers? 6x9 front and 6.5 rear?
- Can I replace them with any aftermarket speaker?
- Are the front doors crossed over by the factory amp for mid-low only?
- Which speakers are 2ohm or 4ohm?
Basically, I just want clearer, crisper sound. I will eventually add either a hotbox or stealth-type box, but I need to fix the mids and highs before I go and add more bass to drown out what little mids/highs I have now. Thanks for all your help!

If you want better sound, might want to start by replacing the speakers. They are of inferior quality, especially when compared directly to Infinity's aftermarket speakers. Crappy materials give you crappy sound.
Many have noted that by just wwaping out the speakers, they are getting better sound.
As far as the actual tech specs on the speakers and such, I don't know, sorry.

I'm a Dakota(05) dude but I do have some info for you. Not sure of your speaker sizes. Best bet is too pull your door panels and take a look. Should be just a couple of screws at the bottom and lift up and out a little. Then disconnect your harnesses in there. If it is like the Daks the speakers have their own mounting ring and are probably attatched to plastic tubes. If so you will have to fabricate mounting rings for the rears out of 1/4" plywood. Aftermarket mounting rings are too thick and the tweets on most coaxs will touch the door panel. The front mids will mount up with the after market adapter rings but just go ahead and fabricate them. Reason being isa lot of the better speakers will have oversize baskets. This will require you to cut about an 1/8th inch from the inside of the ring with a saber saw(use a blade with 10 tpi) and go slow. The stock speakers are most likely 2 ohm like in the Daks and will push approx 40w rms at that load. That was told too me by a guy that bench tests the OEM amps before they go out to Dodge. After market 2 ohm speakers are pricey and only a couple companies make em. Most notably Infinity. But there mid bass sucks and I find there tweets harsh. I replaced mine with Phoenix Gold ZR6.5's because they were decent for comps. And used OctaneR 6.5's for the rear. But they are 4 ohm so you will only get about 20w rms. They sound okay but I have to turn the treble way down because of the factory EQ'ing. They will work until I replace the system and put an after market amp on the comps. You should be able to get adapter harnesses from Metra as you have an "04". I had to use wire taps. A good set of 6.5 comps at a beater price are from Cadence. They are selling them on their site(cadence.com) for $79 a pair. If it was me I would bypass the factory amp and install a new amp off a low level converter if keeping the OEM HU. Also look for a 6x9 to a 6.5 adapter for the rears. Will get better sound even off HU power from what I hear. If I can come up with the money I would like to get a set of those Cadence's. You may also try to get some sound deadener like Dynamat behind the mids up front to increase your bass response.
And by the way, isn't Dodge such a big help. I asked those same questions when my rf mid started to rattle. All they could say was "the ohm rating and the like should be on the back of the speaker and there are no adjustments available on the amp".
Hopes this helps you in the right direction.

The Infinity system has a 240 watt amplifier. All seven speakers take their feed through the amp. The speakers are all 4 ohm, with the exception of the center dash speaker, which is a 3 ohm speaker. Outer dash speakers are 3-1/2" and provide the highs. The center dash speaker is a fill speaker. The front door speakers are 6x9s and provide the base for the system. The rear door or rear panel speakers are listed as 5-1/4" and are two-way speakers that provide the fill.
I swapped out six of the seven speakers on my '04's Infinity system. I used all Infinity Reference speakers in the swap. Two-way 3-1/2" speakers went into the outer dash locations. (I left the factory center dash speaker alone.) In the front doors, I installed the 6-1/2" woofers from component speaker sets; did not use the crossovers or the tweeters, since the factory amp filters the frequency specifically for the low to mid-bass range anyway. In the rear doors, I used slim line 6-1/2" two-way speakers. Don't use a two-way or three-way in the front doors. They will sound like mud. A single cone woofer provides much better sound quality in the front doors.
Did not want to give up the 6-disc factory radio, so I opted to swap out the speakers. Got everything from Crutchfield. I've since added XM Direct to the radio, and the system sounds much better than it did when I drove it off the showroom.

I'd love to see a wiring diagram... Missing some treble (well, a LOT of treble) in my stock Infinity system....
I actually replaced the stock Infinity speakers in my 98 Intrepid with a blend of Radio Shack woofers and some Sony 2-ways I got from Circuit City back in the day... That made a world of differnce and the system ROCKED for the 5 years I owned that ride.... been thinking about doing the same with my 06 Ram..... Need details on dimensions/ohms/crosssover freq's... I can make new crossovers if they're accessible.... kinda hoping I can just swap out a few speakers if possible... Got some Xplods that got yanked out of my new boat because they're not waterproof...... hidden for safe-keeping in the shed, but could get put to use in my truck if opportunity presents.

Its kinda funny, mine sounded fine to me with the stock CD/tape deck, the only thing I did was swap out the RAH code mp3 CD player and haven't looked back.

I would love to find out how you connected the xm radio into the factory radio. I have sirius radio from factory, but it is so hard to navigate. My wife has an '04 Trailblazer and the xm from the factory. It's awesome and so very easy to figure out.

I disconected the whole thing and put all new amps and speakers. I have the MTX box with 2 JL 10W0s and its ok, I' m working on changing that around and putting my 12W3 in once I can find out where I want to put it. I run all JL, with a Clarion head unit.
If your looking for a wiring diagram, I went to Hemitruckclub.com and downloaded the factory service manual. It's a large file, so hopefully youv'e got a good internet connection. I've used the manual a lot, and its been a lot of help, especially with the way our truck stereo's are wired. Best of luck.
