k, my rear has the limited slip diff

i am even more confused now

k, lets put it this way, "trx 4 offroad" i guess is made better for offroad couple of skid plates and extra cooling

what if i am traing to get out of a situation, but its not possible doing so by going straightm does that mean my 4x4 is usless?
but withought it i can't get out

and why won't it work noraly

when u are in 2w mode your diff in the back allowes your wheels to spin in diffrent speeds
why won't the front diff do the same? they are both the same( i don't mean the diff is exectly the same, i know it ain't) ohh and don't forget 2006 model has independent front, both have drive shafts, both coming from the transfer case

or is it cuze the front wheels don't have a diff like front wheel cars, so it is limited in the amount of slip it will alow?

also a note( maybe i need to see the dealer) when i engaged 4wd to test, then i shut it off back to 2wd, the 4wd light comes off but when i try to turn i still feel like its engaed and won't turn( testing only at slow speed so i won't break anything) but when the light comes off i still can't turn, shouldn't the light come off after it completely went back to 2wd?
Your 4X4 system hasn't yet disengaged.
You need to drive a few meters "straight", in either the forward direction and possibly, if it's still binding, also reverse to free off the transfercase.

Ok, regardless the arguments of the functions of front/rear diffs and transfer cases..... If you want your 4x4 to last a long time, only engage it where you have reduced traction. IE on grass, soft dirt, sand, mud, ice, packed snow, etc.... NOT a dry asphalt parking lot.... and certainly NOT a dry, hard surface where you plan to make even a few sharp turns.

No sense it putting any unnecessary wear on it, (or your tires) right?

I cycle my transfer case weekly, but only off road, usually on the beach, but sometimes in my yard (I got 5 acres) if I can't get off work to go to the shore.

Devilshaven, your 4x4 ain't useless.... 4wd is meant to get you going where 2wd can't... Mud, snow, off road, etc.... IE Loose surfaces...

I get the impression you haven't done much off road driving.... I'd highly recommend getting in contact with a local owners group or 4x4 club and tagging along on some outings... The experience would be invaluable.

Yup, ^^^ what he said. Just put it into 2wd and back up some to and it'll come right out.

Frogslinger explained it well.

thing is i don't do much offroading if any

i took this model just because u could shut off the 4wd cuze of gas milage,
i upgraded to this model for more money

when i could have taken an slt model with fulltime 4wd for few grand less

thing is i need 4wd just from the starting line, aka light turns green and snow or rain outside, i need to get moving, i know i can just menage my throutle carfuly but i tired and even doring simple rain in teh summer rear was sliping

or is that fine? turn it on on the light and then shut it off when i get started?

You don't shut off 4wd for gas mileage, you shut it off whenever you are on dry pavement.

No problem when its wet to start (straight ahead) in 4w then take it out.

i know that this is an old topic, but i was searching around, what about dry hard pavment were your rear wheels spin (due to hard acceleration) can you then engage the part-time 4wd

You probably don't want to because you'll accelerate slower in 4WD because of the extra drag. You also can't shift back into 2wd until you slow down.

well its a 2005 ram 2500 cummins,

its equipped with that "shift on fly" system so i can actually disengage when i hit second gear.
and it just feels like it accelerates faster with the 4wd engaged, but i must measure it next time i am driving, right now with 2wd engaged i do 0-60 in 6,8 second.
