Help! First Truck, First Problem!
Hi, I am new here, the one positive about having trouble with my vehicle is I came across this site. I bought my first truck three weeks ago.
I filled my 2003 1500 Laramie up at a local gas station and pulled away. About ten miles down the road my check engine light came on and at the same time my gas tank showed empty and the gas light was on. I came home and turned of the vehicle, tightened the gas cap. Next, I turned on the vehicle and the gas tank was were it should be but the check engine light stayed on. Any thoughts on what could be wrong and if I should take it in.
Thanks for your help!

There's only one way you're going to be sure and that's to take it to a Dodge dealership and have them pull up the codes. Take it from me, just take it in and let them find the problem.
I had my go around with the "Check Engine Light" last year on my 04 Ram. I listened to friends, took it to my regular mechanic who couldn't figure it out, then to a buddy's mechanic who thought he knew what it was. By the time it was all over I spent close to $300.00 and the problem was never rectified.
I finally took it to the Dodge dealership. The other mechanics weren't even close. It turned out to be some check-valve solenoid do-hickey thing behind the left rear fender well. I don't remember exactly what it was but it had to do with the emmisions. The part cost $35.00 and $75.00 for labor. They had it fixed in an hour.
The check engine light can be so many different things I think it's best to take it in. You own a Ram and they aren't cheap to maintain. Better get use to it.
Bottom line, at Dodge I spent $110.00 and was in and out in under two hours. I could have saved a lot of money, time, and heartache if I had done that first.
Just my 2 cents.

If you get a chance, take a look at the FSM for your truck. The DTC list of codes is staggering-------pages and pages----literally. It also helps these days to have a scan tool also, or have access to one. Actrom makes one you can get for small money, at places even like Meijer, or Autozone. You can also do the check with the odometer by turning the key to everything on but do not start three times. I believe you can also download the fsm for your vehicle for free from one of the vendors here at D/F.
I just went out to my truck and turned the key over 3 times and it gave me the error reading of P 0463 which is high voltage from the fuel sensor. I got that from another thread...
"I just got an error code, I think it was P 0463, high voltage from the fuel sensor.. I should probably take it in..its more of an annoyance than a problem, it just ocasionally says my tank is empty [runs fine] has anyone else had this? I phoned the dealership and they said run 3 tanks of Shell [or Sunoco whoever has 94] and they told me to do that, and run injector cleaner..and it should fix itself..so far no luck.. anyone else got any suggestions? [Oh and I ran the code and it says high-voltage from fuel level sensor] and it only happens when it gets to about the half mark, before that its fine"
I plan on going to a local Schucks and grabbing their best fuel infector cleaner and filling with high octane gas. My question is will this problem correct itself and the light go off? Or will I need to reset the light?
P.S. I am happy I came across the site...

If that's the code you got I doubt changing fuel is going to fix the problem. Sounds to me like you have a bad fuel send in your tank. I would definitely take it in and have it change. The part shouldn't be too much. I bet they can change it out for about 100.00.
As far as doing it yourself well, I don't mess with anything that has to do with voltage and gas tanks. I'd rather pay and have the folks at Dodge take care of it for me.
