Going from 3.92gears to 4.56gears
OK, so I'm kinda new to the whole gearing thing but . . .does the wheel size really make a difference? Isn't the overall tire size really the factor. I mean if you have 15" with 35"s I'm betting it would be the same as 20"s with 35"s. SInce the outside diameter is the same the torque required would be the same.
...that's partly true...but think of it this way...you have a 10 speed bike....you keep it in one gear generally thats ok for cruisin... but now you have the opportunity to change that gear to a higher gear so that it is easier to move that same wheel...and believe me, wen yur at a dead stop at a light and it turns green, it takes less effort to mov those 35's (with 4.56's) to the speed limit than with our stock gears... which means, less stress on the tranny, and gas mileage improves in the city...the con is higher speed mileage (in excess of 70 mph) where the mileage will drop a little... but I'll take that con anyday to improve performance...
...and by accident, when i got my new set of tires, they wer actually shorter in diameter than the stock ones (285/50-20) because they didnt hav stock inventory.... imagine what it did for my gearing... now I start even quicker from a dead stop...
where do you shop for gears at, what brand, vendor?
how hard are they to install - is that something you have to have a mechanic install, or can in be a DIY
Also what did your gears costs you and for the installation?
TIA,
Boyd

...you prolly can get them online for about $180-$190 (Motivs)..I have genuines cuz my gear guy felt responsible for my first install (bad install with yukon's) and replaced it with gears he carries in-shop. I'll hafta find you a link for it...a local gear shop installed it for me for $250.00... thats cheap... this is something you really can't do yourself because of the fine tune adjustments that hafta to be made...my gear guy basically had to install and re-install 3x before he got the optimum setting...
thx man; sounds like it is best suited to find a shop that specializes in gears - a lot of tweaking involved. Im anxious to mod my truck, but dont want to put something on there that will have to cause it to be in the shop 24x7
Ill have to sit on this one for a bit, would be nice to see some more power off the line

When I change my gear ratio to I need to calibrate my speedo. Cause I see video where a guy has 4.10's and his speedo needle shots to 30mph stays there for like 2seconds then it goes regularly.
Carman, you are right on. Tire diameter means most of it, not wheel size, except;
The overall weight of the tire/wheel makes up what is called rotational weight. The heavier it is, the harder to get it spinning.

...speedo calibration is not based on gears...it's rotation of the axle...so the calibration would be needed if you change the tire size (from stock)...that's the cool thing about superchips, i can adjust my tire diameter to keep the speedo correct...
